I am not going to pretend to know what's wrong, but I don't see how the valves would be messed up by going over 3K RPMs.

Which shop are dealing with?
I just got my car back out from the "Short-Block Replacement Under Warranty In A Month" program today. I drove around 100 break-in miles today and I happened to notice a little valve ticking. I will be giving John Eagle Honda a call tomorrow to schedule an appointment.
Good luck with your car, Kirk!
