It is called a Helmholtz resonator. Hermann von Helmholtz invented the Helmholtz resonator to show the strength of the various tones.
Basically, without it you'll get alot more droning. Alot of guys will take this off of the OEM exhaust and add it to their new aftermarket catback to help alleviate the droning.
