Default exhaust heat shield on an ap2 bumper?

While waxing my car today, i noticed that the passenger side muffler and bumper of my 04 seem to have additional heat shielding. in 5 years of ownership AND installing and removing the exhaust before i never noticed. heres some pics. that white crap is metal polish i got EVERYWHERE while polishing the tips out

broad view

slightly different angle...notice the piece that seems to be stitch welded to the muffler

muffler itself with the "heat shield"

passenger side for comparison

just noticed that at this angle it looks a whole lot like an ap1 circular exhaust tip rather than an ap2 oval tip

I first noticed it when I switched from an ap1 bumper to an ap2 bumper, only on one side for some reason.

my personal opinion is that more exhaust gas flows through the pass side muffler. when you look at the split, how inline it is with the res of the system and such i think thats why.

makes me wonder if honda only did the dual exhaust for more or less looks. also might yield some insight into why singles seem to make so much power.

They definitely did a dual exhaust for looks. No one argues that.
It makes sense that the passenger side receives more floW

Honda certainly kept tweaking the S over it's life span, even little changes like that. I agree it's done on one side due to the passenger side bias of the exhaust, probably for heat and sound issues. When I was on a weight loss kick, I cut it off along with the top mounted heat shields on the muffler cans and deleted the mid pipe resonator. Very cheap mod and the resulting tone was a bit more aggressive but still quiet.
