lol...i think the funky smell is oil burning at high rpms..as far as the previous owner goes she was a chick not to dog girls or anything but didnt seem like the type to really enjoy this car or abuse it all of the services were done at my local honda dealer...and also i just had my valve adjusment done about a month ago i havent noticed any leaks ill take a closer gander..

"JFUSION"
wouldnt it be better to run a 10w30 since that what our cars call for ive been thinking about switching to amsoil here alot of good things bout it..thought id give it a shot, as far as the amsoil goes and the cleaning additives can you please possibly point me in the right direction as to where i can order them from...

Also do you know about how many quarts of oil are still in at the H symbol and how many at the L...just wondering how you figured out how much oil i had gone through...Thanks

take if for what it's worth, if you ask 10 people you'll get 11 different answers. I'll tell you what worked for me.

Firstly, make sure you have a relatively new pcv valve. Any oil burning smell comes from oil leaking onto hot parts, at high rpm vtec operation you get higher levels of leakage. If it was burning out the tail pipe you woudlnt' really smell it.

Honda lists 5w40 as a suitable oil for this car in addition to 10w30, so no worries about that viscosity.

I would run a couple of short intervals using a High mileage oil such as Valvoline, Castrol has one, as does Penzoil. Run them with a half bottle of Riselone each, do two short oil change runs of about 600-1000 miles. Then switch to the oil of your choice after that. I run Amsoil 5w40, Castrol has a 5w40, Amsoil 10w30 is excellent, you can even keep running a High mileage 10w30 oil as it would be a good choice to reduce consumption. I like Riselone as it comes in a 10w30 viscosity and doesn't thin out the base oil. There is an excellent product called Auto-Rx (buy it online, do a search) that is highly regarded as an effective oil cleaner. There is also Seafoam and Marvel Mystery oil.

I buy Amsoil by the case from a local distributor speed shop in my home town, it is cheaper by the case. You can become a preferred customer with Amsoil and you can buy it at a cheaper price that way, look it up on their website.

On the dipstick the level between L and H is about 1 quart, you said that you added one quart to get it up to the L, thus it was 2 quarts low by my books. Try not to run oil that low on this engine as you risk oil starvation issues which has been known to kill this engine, I make a point of keeping the oil at H all the time to avoid the risk.

I really hate Mobil1. It burned much more oil in my car than any other synthetic oil out there. I will never use it again.

I've tried countless brands of oils in my AP1. All of them get burned in the same fashion. About 1 quart every 1k.

well I guess I'm too late now, but as many of the owners have stated above, one quart per 1000 miles is appropriate depending on your vtec habits

1qt per 1000 miles is standard on ap1s.

Some folks have mixed results with m1, though it really varies.

If you Vtec quite often.
