I prefer to use Kerosene. It's a lot less harsh than other solvents out there and any residue left on the parts won't do any harm to the engine oil. Just my personal preference. It does an extremely good job of cleaning oil varnish off of parts.

The keepers that hold the retainer in place sink down, exposing the inside wall of the retainer. Both of these are cracked but the right one looks a little worse.

I had a very similar problem recently. Intake retainers were badly cracked, cam was etched, springs had clear wear at the top where they were rubbing up. I replaced retainers, springs, intake cam, and half of the intake side of the rocker arm assembly.

are the exhaust springs supposed to have this groove? dont remember that on the intake side. they are different part numbers though.

of course that is not normal. checked the springs on cly 3 and its not nearly as bad. Looks like i will be buying some springs.
