EPS (power steering) Problems
Hi all,
I did some searching and found an answer... but it didn't work. Please help!
I removed the 70A EPS fuse in an attempt to defeat the power steering to see what a manual rack would be like. For anyone who cares, it's an utter dog, unbearable at low speeds IMHO.
While reading up on the EPS, I realize now that I need to re-learn the torque sensor setting. Looking in the manual for my '01 it shows that the Honda tester must be used to do this- in a thread here, someone said the SCS can be be used.
I put the fuse back in and went through the procedure listed, shorting the SCS, my EPS light stays on. The procedure is simple- leave the wheel straight, then short the SCS, turn the wheel 45 degrees left, turn on the ignition... EPS light should go out in 4 seconds. Mine stays on.
What the hell is the deal here?! I'd like to get the power steering working again, and this procedure is moronically straightforward. Can anyone verify that you can use the SCS to do this and not have to use the Honda scan/interface/diagnostic tool?
The SCS that I found is a two-pin yellow connector with two green wires that goes to a "blank" hole in the fuse box, BTW.
Thanks!!!

Since no one seems to know/care...
I started it up this morning and it works fine. No MIL, no EPS light. Works great.
My understanding was that the torque position was saved in memory... I guess it's in E^2 or FLASH. It apparently doesn't care that the power was removed.

Much better. It would seem to me that there is still boost all the way up to 30 or 40 mph. It didn't feel the "same" as "boosted" until 45 or 50.
I liked it, but per my other thread (what I tried), I think the only way around the boost is through modifying the sensor. It's just too damn heavy as a manual rack.

what size wheels are you running on your car marcucci? ever since i put my big brake kit on i have felt like the steering wheel is way too light. keep in mind that the kit drops 9 pounds per corner for a total of 18 lbs., so it is quite a bit lighter than factory. i was debating on removing the power steering and was wondering what it would feel like.

I'm stock. It might work for you, then, if you noticed a significant decrease in effort. It's easily an order of magnitude harder to turn the wheels, though... it felt OK on my dusty garage floor, but in the driveway it was a BEAR.
