The module itself has a rubber o-ring under the cover to protect the electronics inside. Under normal situations it should be perfectly fine where/how it is. It's possible that either someone had it open before or the seal wore out leading to your failure. Either that, or it had nothing to do with the o-ring and the unit just failed on it's own. I do know that thousands of owners have collectively put millions of miles on their S2000's and never had any issue with the EPS module. I, for one, am not worried about it or it's location.
