I had a high pitch whine on another vehicle ,not my S2000, that was quite noticeable while the engine was idling and warm.Turned out to be a waterpump bushing. Good luck locating yours if you ever do.

ok so it can only be 5 things, if the noise goes away with the belt off.
tensioner pulley
idler pulley (below tensioner pulley)
water pump
alternator
AC compressor bearing
Use a long skinny screwdriver as a stethescope. BE CAREFUL OF BELT AND MOVING PARTS you will find the noise very quickly. Screwdriver actully works better than a stethescope.
My guess is the alternator.

yeah i will have to try the screwdriver, thanks.
I tried a proper stethoscope and there was too much noise from other things. so it was saturating my hearing and i couldnt locate it.
I will try changing the idler also (have changed tensioner)

I'm about to order the idler pulley as I think my whine is from this pulley. 3AM where are you getting yours from? What are its dimensions, I'm thinking of going dayco as I heard good things about them - not sure if they do OEM, but they're cheap with warranty.
I'll try to get it done over the weekend to see if it's the culprit as well.
PM me!

sorry I got confused, I replaced the auto tensioner pulley, not the idler.
it was actually listed in the dayco catalogue as the idler/tensioner and hence the confusion, but its actually the auto tensioner.
anyways part number for tensioner pulley is dayco 89051.
they didnt have a listing for idler so you might have to go genuine.

ahh.. Does anyone know whether AP2/AP1 idler pulleys are the same? I see a Dayco listing but for 06+.. I'm sure Dayco will have something to fit, as they base it on the type of pulley, and 3 measurements..
Yeah, tensioner and idler are two different pulleys. Are you going genuine?

so I was wrong, I ran the engine again without the accessory belt, and I can still hear the noise.
i guess last time I did it I missed it as its difficult to hear it over the engine and exhaust noise, but from inside the car, I can definetly hear the whine...
that rules out any of the bearings or pulleys.... i have no idea.
