Default Engine Speculation

Hi Guys and Girls,

I own a 2001 AP1 with Hytech Header - Decat - Skunk2 Megapower Exhaust.

About a month ago I noticed a strange metalic rattle coming from underneath the car. The rattle doesnt occur all of the time, only sometimes and normally when the car is idle and stationary.

I have done the obvious checks and got underneath to see if the header and exhaust were rubbing or rattling against anything, nope. I tightened all the bolts up just to be sure, and nope this did not work either.

I then thought it might be the heat shield was a bit loose. So I tightened that all up earlier this afternoon, still the noise is there.

When I start the car in the morning when its cold (obviously) the car idles at around the 2000rpm mark and then settles after a few minutes. The rattle metalic rasp / rattle normally starts around the 1300rpm to 1000rpm. and then fades away.

Interestingly though my TCT has stopped making its usual ticking noise upon warm startup. This has made me start to think maybe the TCT has finally given up the ghost and is causing this noise.

The best way I can possibly describe it is: A metallic rattling / rasp that appears to be coming from the enginebay / block itself. Almost as if there is some metal thing inside the engine rattling around.

My car has about 103K miles on it and has frequent oil changes, everything is topped up as it should.

I am stumped to what is causing the noise and am getting a little annoyed and embarrassed by it now.

Does anyone know what could be the issue and/or the fix.

Thanks

Mike

Next time it does it put your hand on your shifter knob and see if it quiets down. Sounds funny, but I was tracking down the same style noise that I was sure was engine.... Turned out to be loose shifter knob.

If your tct was making noise, it's probably stopped due to colder weather.

If you know it was making noise before, order a billman tct and be done with it. It's easy pezzy and will help you rule out tct while tracking that noise.

Would refurbishing the tct by doing billmans repair fix this issue? Or is a new tct needed?
