Engine Rebuild break in
hey guys, just got my motor back from Laskey Racing, and looking for some advice on how to break her in, she is built to OEM specifications (but with aftermarket parts), should i juts follow OEM recommended? keep it in the low RPM range? vary revs?
i was told to run non synthetic in the motor for the first oil change, other than that what should i do?
it was a complete top and bottom end rebuild

The builders didn't give you specific instructions? I'd change oil and oil filter a couple of times before 1K miles. Use good quality mineral-based oil. Change to synthetic, after break-in.
Good luck with new motor.

builder said just to run normal oil for the first change, and said i could just drive it normally.
and that's it

Many of the local engine builders use the break in oil from Amsoil.

FWIW... I've always used Maxima petroleum-based break-in oil. Cars and bikes. Really have had good luck with it.

For oil changes:
Startup - Break-in oil, change to non-synthetic after the car has warmed up and idled for awhile.
after 50 miles - Non-Synthetic
after 200 miles - Non-Synthetic
after 500 miles - Non-Synthetic
after 1000 miles - Synthetic
Use a magnetic drain plug during this period of oil changes as you may get very small metal shavings from the rings seating and bearings being broken in.
As for the mechanical break in, I know it's advisable to vary the RPM's as much as possible to help seat the piston rings in the cylinder walls. City driving would probably be ideal for accomplishing this, I also know some people advise letting the engine spin down while braking and letting the RPMs fall a bit rather than clutching in.
After the first 100 miles I'd probably start revving the engine up a bit higher every so often. Not to redline but maybe 80% of the way there. Once you're on synthetic you should take the car all the way to redline. This is of course assuming you already have a tune on the car.
If someone wants to give their opinion on this let me know, as this is just what I've gathered over a few years of reading. I've never actually done this process myself.

Maybe follow the instructions on Laskey Racing's break-in page?
