Engine Oil Consumption: "00-01 S2000

Just picked this up at the Honda dealer. It was a service news clip.
The '00-01 S2000 has an engine that, due to its high performance nature, can consume a quart of oil in 1,000 miles when driven at high rpm. And during the first 600 (it's break-in period), the engine may consume even more oil. Make sure you remind your customers to check the engine oil level every time they fill the fuel tank, and if they need to add oil, use only 10W-30 grade for optimum fuel economy and year-round protection. Have them refer to pages 119 and 155 in their owner's manual for details.

Why aren't these things smoking? I've read many of the past posts re: oil consumption & all the talk about where the oil is coming from and where it's going and how it got there. Usually, any car that consumes (ie. burns) a qt. of oil in 500-1000 miles of normal driving would have a cloud of smoke following it. Considering that the most oil usage on our cars would happen during VTEC land, you don't really travel that far on a qt. of oil. I have the usual reported oil use and I have never noticed smoke when doing the VTEC thing or any other time. I haven't read that anyone else has either other than the odd one that is raced. Why aren't these cars smoking?

Other than what I posted I really can't say why it uses oil and there is no visible indication. I wonder if it has anything to do with the carbon reinforced cylinder liners?

A majority of the oil is consumed at high rpm (not at idle) where it is 1: diluted by a lot of exhaust flow volume and 2: most likley cleaned up in the cat. I have about 400 on mine now (no vtec at all) and I have put abot 1/2 quart into it. I would say that even once the car has broken in that if you hit vtec regularly you will continue to see oil consumption that requires topping up between oil changes.
Once the break in is complete I think I am going to pop out the #4 spark plug and drop a scope into the cylinder to take a look.

As I have mentioned before, my del Sol uses about a quart every 1000 miles, when shifting at the redline a lot. I was worried, so to test, I went 1000 miles without taking it over 6000 rpm. I lost nothing.
In the del Sol, I can notice smoke, but only at night with headlights behind me. I can't see anything in the daytime...and I agree with tbalon about the reasons we might not be seeing it.
The Sol has 80K miles so I will see how it does over the next 120,000 miles. After all, it is a Honda
