Default engine oil color

i tried that new penzoil ultra and now about 1500 miles later i decided to change the oil because it looked dark. now that im looking at the old oil, its wayyy darker then i thought. whats with this? either the penzoil did a good job of cleaning my engine or maybe i hit vtec a lil too much.

See what happens on the next oil change. If it persists you may have some pissy injectors or fouled plugs. How's the car running overall? Smoothe idle? Crisp throttle response?

I'm not familiar with Penzoil Ultra as I've never used it.Perhaps it's a high detergent motor oil and it did in fact flush some carbon desposits outta your engine.Which is a good thing.

I've always heard from many people in oil forums that the colour of the oil doesn't mean much. In other words you don't have to change it just because it is dark. Some oil varieties start out darker than others, and of course an oil can clean an engine as it works and it traps impurities. You can change it if you like but it wouldnt' be necessary on that short of a run.

Engine oil color is irrelevant. This is doubly true with synthetics since they tend to darken even more quickly than conventional oils. If you want to get a definitive answer on how well your oil is protecting your engine, get a used oil analysis from Blackstone Labs.

Also, Pennzoil Ultra is a fantastic oil by many accounts. I've seen UOAs from 7500+ mile samples that still have extremely high TBN and low metallic content.

i used the pennzoil synthetic (maybe it's the ultra?) and after about 1000+ miles it's still golden like it came out of the bottle..
