Engine noise, tapping sound?
Hi guys,
I've have about 170,000 miles on my '03 s2000. I think I hear a tapping noise that I'm not familiar with.
Do you guys hear it too? If so, what could it be?
Or does it sound normal to you guys?
Thanks, Jeff.

I can hear a tapping noise from the video. Take the serpentine belt off and start the car for a 1/2 a minute. If the noise disappears the sound is coming from your pulleys.

Yes, less than 20k miles ago. Adjusted by my mechanic and rechecked by me immediately after.
Friend thinks I spun rod bearing due to running a quart low a couple of times recently.

I definitely hear a knocking sound. The spun bearing suggestion seems reasonable. You could get a used oil analysis done, which would tell you definitively if it's a bearing.
I wouldn't put too many miles on it before getting it fixed. If it's a bearing you could end up with bigger problems.

If you drive the car normally, I don't think a quart low on oil would cause a rod bearing to spin. There was a guy here on s2ki that ran his s2000 2 quarts low on oil and everything was still okay. I think you should try my suggestion and rule out the pullys first. Start with small things first and then move to the bigger culprits. You can always cut open your oil filter and inspect it for any metal flakes after you ruled out the pullys. Doesn't sound like any of the spun rod bearing video's that I listened to on YouTube.
