Engine Noise Diagnosis - Solved
Hi guys,
I was wondering if you could take a listen and give your input on what you think this might be.
Background:
'01 124k km, no engine mods other than K&N intake kit. I recently started hearing a scratchy clicky noise with the window down, resonating from under the car and off the curb on initial throttle and deceleration. I don't drive the car much and I finally got around to taking it to my tech yesterday. It turns out, I was really low on oil. Maybe 1.5L came out when changed. It's strange because I changed it before storing last winter and brought the car out in April and have driven roughly 2000km only since. I don't recall what oil I used. So I had the oil and filter changed and used Motul 8100 5w40 since it seems recommended by many S owners and he had it in stock. The rest of the day the car sounded fine, no more noise until later when I decided to push the car a little on the highway. Afterwards, when at a stop at idle I started hearing a new rattle.
Clip 1. Engine. The engine running recorded from the bay with open hood, allowed to warm up a few minutes. Seems fine.

Clip 2. Rattle. The rattling noise. Recorded at the same time as engine running from under the driver side rocker panel. You can hear the rattle. Engine is idling.

I did some reading on here and there are so many things it sounds like it coud be: TCT, Valves, exhaust hangers, rod bearings (please no). I really appreciate it if some experts could chime in before I go to my tech again. I'm not driving it right now out of fear.
Best,
Lyndon
**Update
The noise is coming from the catalytic converter. I didn't take it apart but it sounds like a piece has broken off inside and depending on where it's sitting, it will vibrate and rattle against the housing. I'm going to leave it alone until I either decide to put a straight pipe on, or replace the catalytic if/when the car starts throwing related codes.
