Default Engine Noise

Hi,

I am new here I just bought a 2001 s2000 with 44k on the clock from the main dealer with every service being properly carried out the car is absolutely mint but I have noticed that the (what I think) the engine tappets are a little bit noisy (much more noticeable with the roof down), not sure if this is ok or not?

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks

The f20c engine has mechanical followers with adjustable valve lash clearances. So even when the lash clearances are correct, they do make some noise. If the lash is too loose it will make more noise. If the clearances get too tight, they make less noise, at least for a while.

You could get a valve adjustment done just for peace of mind, since you just bought it. Pretty cheap insurance against possible expensive engine damage.

In his car, keep proper lubrication a priority - engine, tranny, and diff. If it overheats, loses oil pressure, or sounds unhealthy; shut it down and fix the problem. Watch out for mechanical overrev due to misshift. If you launch it like a dragster, the diff may give you trouble.

Don't worry, S2000 is a tough reliable sumbitch, but the above stuff can cost big $$$ to fix.

Confirm the origination point of the noise. The timing chain tensioner is a common replacement part on this car, and I expect it could be mistaken for valve/injector noise when it first starts to go bad.

Search for timing chain tensioner, and you should be able to find a thread on how to locate the tensioner, verify the noise, and if necessary, replace the part.
