Engine Light on, Just got it back from Honda :(
Hi Guys
Hope you can help
I've just picked up my UK 01 Silverstone AP1.... 90K
After the two hour drive home, I went to start the car back up and the engine light came one. The next day I took it to my local Honda garage for a diagnosis, here's what they said:
Checked for EML told me I need to spend £1300 on a new Chain, tensioner, guides, chain case etc... and 8 hours labour!!!
Now there is a very slight rattle coming from the chain when warm, and I mean slight noting like the vids I have seen on here. But I'm not convinced thats why I'm getting the error code or is it? Honda reckon they would change the tensioner first before the chain, makes sense as they said this usually fixes it and its only £200. The car has a receipt for a new CAT and O2 sensor around 3 months ago.
Guys please help as I really want to drive the car but its just sat on my drive looking lovely
Thanks
John Harris

I believe those codes are for a random misfire and a bad seondary 02 sensor on the cat. It is just a general misfire code it doesn't lead you to any specific cylinder unfortunately. I would re-set it and drive to see if they come back. How old are the plugs on that car ?, they may need replacing if not done in the past. Misfires can be caused by bad coils or injectors however not knowing what cylinder can lead you on a goose-chase.
Don't believe the shop recommending a new timing chain, we've seen s2k's go 2-3 times that mileage without needing new chains. A new chain tensioner may solve your issue less expensively.
I would take the car back to the dealer that did the cat or sensor work as it should be under warranty.
