Default Engine Knock

I have a '00 with 42,xxx miles. I have a slight knock in the motor when accelerating (4-6k rpm's). It sounds like the knock when you are low on oil, but I have checked the oil and it is fine. I am running 5w-30 Mobil 1. Could this be a valve issue? Sometimes you can hear it when it is at an idle also, then it goes away.

The motor is totally stock. Any suggestions?

Chip

iispms, are you describing the sound correctly? A knock is generally a low powerful sound coming from deep within the engine. If you think the valves are the problem, they will not be knocking. The valves will make a higher pitched sound that will sound nothing like a knock. They will make a light ticking sound. And yes, sometimes their sound will come and go. It is not a problem, usually, if the valves are making noises. If it IS a problem with the valves, they would be making a lot of noise. It is normal, with adjustable valves, to have a little bit of valve noise. You should be barely able to hear the valves, if you know what to listen for.

Is taking it to a professional out of the question? These posts about "WHAT DO I DO!?" just seem very niave to me...it's obvious what you do when you out of your realm of knowledge.

I have looked into that. I like to know what is wrong with it first incase it is a simple solution. I was hoping that someone else had run into this. If I can't figure it out....it is going to the shop.

I actually drove another S last night. It was doing the same thing between 4-6k rpm. I was relieved to hear the exact same thing. I would have to guess that it is the valves and not a rod knock. It is not that loud and doesn't happen all the time.

For those of you that responded, I appreciate it. Next time you are in your car, gradually accelerate your car and listen for a slight "tick" between 4-6k rpm. Let me know if yours does it too.
