engine "fluttering" noise?

engine "fluttering" noise?
Hey all. Long time...
Anyway, after driving for about a full tank with the Check Engine light on (hopefully trying to discount it as a gas-cap-loose error, but to no avail) I was sitting in traffic yesterday, noticing a distinct "fluttering" noise coming from the engine. I had plenty of opportunity to rule out the transmission or an "at-speed" cause.
Rev the engine, from about 2-3k to about 5-6k a distinct fluttering noise is audible (above that, general engine noise drowns it out). Is this just something I haven't noticed since I've always got music playing (not typically very loud) or have typically had the top down the entire summer or could it be more serious than that?
Either way I suppose I have to get it in to find out why the Check Engine light is on... Ugh. Thanks!
