engine flush

after I bought my ap1 with 55k miles on it I removed the valvecover to replace a leaky gasket and found the top end varnished up. Speaking with the last two owners they both ran Castrol Syntec and replaced it every 3000 miles or less. Not sure what happened there but I put in a new pcv valve in case it may have been part of the problem.
I then ran some short runs with Riselone and Castrol GTX (two runs of 1000 kms), then I did two short runs with some High Mileage oils which tend to be good cleaners. After that I switched to Amsoil permanently. After 6 months I opened up the valvecover again to double check my valve clearances and the top end was spotless. All of the varnish previously there was gone, it looked like a new engine, and it's stayed that way for the past 2 years.

If you decide to use Auto-Rx, please pay close attention to the instructions. This isn't a product that you just throw in there and forget about it. If the engine is sludged, I recommend that you change the engine oil filter every 1000 miles during the clean and rinse phases. I personally think that the clean phase should be done during the warmer months, since normal engine oil temps for longer periods will help the cleaning process, and ARX has a very high pour point. Also, shake the bottle well before pouring into the crankcase.
Change your PCV valve before and after you use ARX.

I pulled the oil pan (i broke it) to replace at 10 years 90k miles, perfectly clean... pulled the valve cover at 105k miles to do a valve adjustment, also perfect, I doubt you need it if you have been using quality oils.
