Honestly, this is probably because your engine mounts are toast.
As you know, I put the Innovative Mounts in recently, haven't had a chance to drive it since then though. I will say this - my passenger side mount was nearly ripped in two and the driver side mount was completely ripped.
I have no doubt this was why I was having issues shifting 1-2 at high rpms.
The Engine Torque Damper is a bandaid over bad engine mounts...

from what I read, I thought the heat shield was there to protect the break fluid reservoir on RHD s2ks. I have been running without a heat shield for a month now, and have checked to see if the battery/AC lines were catching an excessive amount of heat from my header (t1r header with no shield) and nothing feels hot to the touch.
Weather has been quite cold lately though.
And yes, initial removal of the heat shield was a PITA. I have since just left the 4th screw loose so the shield just rests on it while I tighten the other screws. Well, until I started to run without anyway.

perhaps the engine torque damper could be seen as an aid in getting more mileage from the stock motor mounts?

It would be best to cut the hole in the factory shield to allow the damper to pass through. It is a pain to install the shield but, it is there for a reason.
It gives a clean finished look to the mod when the heat shield is in place
