My brother in law was driving my car. He said he was going about 75mph when he tried to downshift to 5th gear, instead he selected 3rd. He said the rpms went up to somewhere around 8000. At that point he immediately shifted back to sixth gear. He drove for another 5 seconds, when he heard ticking noise from the engine, he pulled over the car and shuttoff the engine. When he tried to restart the engine it wouldn't start, the engine wouldn't turn over. The car was towed to my house at this point. I pulled the spark plugs, one of the plugs had obvious impact damage. I am assuming the engine siezed since it will not turn over. I checked the oil level it was normal. I'm planning on taking the car to honda specialist this week to asses the damage. Would a misshift like that cause that kind of damage, since the engine was not overreved? I've only had the car for about a month, it has 43k miles it is 2002, did not have any problems before this incident. I am assuming the engine will need a rebuild, would it be better to get another engine?
Third in an AP1 revs out to 91 MPH so at 75MPH he would have been around 7.5k.

I say he is a liar and was going a hell of a lot faster.

That or you already had cracked retainers and one decided to go.

I'm sorry you had this problem. Hopefully it will be resolved and you two can remain friends.

After hearing stories like this, I will never let anyone drive the car. Well other then my wife.

S#!t the wife will do just as much damage. overrevving burning up the clutch, grinding gears, women also dont understand with a low car you have to angle up driveways.

the other posibility it that he didn't do anything wrong, and that you engine was about to blow anyway... it doesn't seem very likely at all but it is always a posibility.

one more reason not to let anyone drive your car, cause if my engine blows i want to be able to know that it was my fault or a defect. i don't want to play guessing games trying to figure out if it was from last week when i let that guy borrow my car...

if he is telling you the truth, then id say somebody (the previous owner ) over revved it , and at that point cracked the retainer, which are known to crack in ap1 pretty often in over rev situations. when they are cracked they can split at any moment, not necessarily at another over-rev situation. i know a person who was just driving and the retainer split while doing 30 mph on the small street.

so one thing you definately should have done was once you bought it first thing inspect your retainers. or replace with ap2 (but if you do then you also need to replace keepers with ap2 also)

why your spark plug is damaged is cuz the valve has dropped in and the piston has mulched it and i can even bet that your cylinder walls are jacked up too and not only in that one cylinder. what happened to that buddies scar was once the valve got mulched and piston going up pushed all the metal up in the intake manifold and the other piston sucked them in and scratched the rest of the cylinder walls. even ripped out the valve seat.
