Is there an ECU code that gets recorded when you hit the rev limiter and/or overrev that car? My car's at the dealer and I want to know if they can see how the car's been "driven".

Neither of those events will trigger a check-engine light unless some damage was done during the "over-rev". Why do ask? Nervous?

My mechanic said that the over-rev can be identified once they open up the valve cover.

Over revs, hitting the rev limiter, stalling the car, hitting the top speed limiter. All these do not turn on a check engine light, but are recorded in the ECU and can be retrieved by the dealer. I am not aware of a way to clear these with out the dealer computer tool. This is all part of OBDII. OBDI had it too. I remember getting a call from my mechanic with my Jetta VR6 (when out of warranty, private mechanic)

Mechanic:"Andy, do you redline your car?"

Andy: "Ah, no. Why?"

Mechanic; "are you shure you don't redline your car, (hint, hint)"

Andy: "Oh, well maybe once or twice..."

BUSTED!

Mechanic: "Look, I don't care what you do, I just need to know so I can give you the best service, I'm not VWofA."

So as you can see, they will know.

I'm not sure about the rest of the scenarios and I'm not even positive on this car. I do know for a fact that on Z28s the redlines are recorded in the ECU.

Trust me, they don't have to open you motor to know you redlined. The computer tattles on you. I was told in the previous experience, not from a dealer it was an independant mechanic/friend, and told by Honda that the S2000 will store redlines in the ECU.

So I guess the obvious question is, how can one reset or erase the ECU?

Well, conventional wisdom is that disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes or so will "reset" the ECU...but there are lots of types of RAMs/ROMs/PROMs that might preserve a "redline flag" even through a reset. Anyone with an OBDII tool care to do some experiments?
