So have we decided whether this is an issue on AP2's?
I know there is some history of it on AP1s!

Well the T1R spacers are not yet available.
True, they are due any day now though.

The 2 piece design is a plus for the beginner or inexperienced mechanic too.

On second thought this whole spacer thing is... at least not clear to me.

All the spacers do is move the bucket more outwards.
They don't change angles at all.
And the angle makes the spider move more during one rotation compared to OEM.
More movement = more wear.
No lowering for me, never!

I can see that a lowered car creates more wear on its buckets & spider rollers.
(because you're driving around all the time with a compressed suspension)
If you then add spacers you move the spider more into the bucket on "fresh" steel so its easy to think spacers work.
Until that part wears too.
Then swap the buckets...

I seriously doubt that under any circumstance the spiders will come out of the buckets, not even when the suspension is fully compressed.
Not even without spacers.

Maybe AP2 buckets are stronger, made of different steel, hardened?

I think you got the angles backwards. From your picture, would only happen if you raised the car.

Well.. the buckets are bolted onto the output shafts of the diff.
The diff doesn't move when you compress the suspension or lower the car.
The hub moves upwards in relation to the diff when you compress the suspension or lower the car.
That makes the axle & spider have a different "angle of attack" in relation to the bucket.

Without any detailed drawings or clear pictures its a guess how the "angle of attack" is on an OEM ride hight car.
But I'm guessing the axle is as good as straight to minimize wear on the CV's.
Again.. that is my guess.
Lowering the car will change the angle of how the axle & spider enters the bucket.
No offence.. but I think that is kinda obvious
Maybe it will change it not much or move it to an angle close (but on the other side of the neutral line) to OEM ride hight.
In that case lowering will introduce little extra wear on the CV's.
On thing to remember is that when the suspension is compressed (during driving, cornering, ect.) the ange will only grow, introducing more movement, more wear.

All the spacers do is move the buckets more outwards in a horizontal line.
Because the diff is mounted horizontal.
That makes the axle & spider & rollers go deeper into the buckets.
Spacers do not do anything to the hub.
That makes me think it does nothing to "get an axle back into the OEM position"
IOW adding spacers on a lowered car don't make your axles straigth again.

ok, so the main question is.....

do you need these on an AP2??? Or is it only the AP1's that have this problem???

im wondering this as well since the last thing i want to do to my car is buy axles or basically anything that wont make my car look better or go faster. im more than willing to buy the axle spacers, but if its not necessary and the axles will wear out ANYWAY id just as soon save the 125-200 bucks and put it towards the new axles. hopefully a 1" drop wont harm them TOO much. i imagine the more aggressive the drop the more wear it will put on the axles. i'd really like to know if ANY of these companies selling these "axle spacer kits" actually GUARANTEE that the axles wont wear out prematurely once you install their products. i'd hate to drop 200 bucks on something that will do absolutely NOTHING for the performance or reliability of the vehicle.
