For cars that do have Traction control and Cruise it takes less overall components to run a throttle by wire.
I still think it's quite silly that manufacturers have figured out a very elaborate electronic means to replace a cable.

Bimmer has put drive by wire systems in the M3 (e46) and the upcoming M5. The advantage that you get with the BMW systems is the sport mode button next to the shift lever. It allows for "sport" mode which increase the sensitivity if the throttle pedal to allow for a sportier feel. However with the sport button off it is a much more docile beast around town. Corvette has had TBW for sometime as well as most of the italians. If you have TBW you can put more buttons in your console and people apparently like lots of buttons.

DBW has many advantages. The first Honda to use the DBW is in the 03 Acura MDX. Some of the advantages of DBW is complete control of the fuel and air management by the computer. Cruise control units can be eliminated and incorporated in the ECU programming the same thing can be said about traction control and Stability programming.... it allows the ECU to override throttle inputs of the driver in conditions when traction control, cruise control and/or electronic stability program is used.

95 is the 1st year. The people that convert OBDII NSX's to AEM EMS have to swap the throttle body, cables and pedal assembly beacause a OBDII compatible EMS that supports DBW doesn't exist yet.

Another aspect of DBW that I'm surprised hasn't been discussed here yet is that it makes a so equipped car easier to disable via external means. I know this sounds a bit like 'big brother' paranoia ... but it's not meant that way.
Technologies like DBW that have been filtering into cars over the past couple of decades will allow developed and future law enforcement technologies to shut your car down electronically - without frying the cars ECU. This is not to say law enforcement will be the only ones with the toys though.
This is a good thing if your car has just been stolen...
The bad side: well there are probably several thousand opinions on that side of the coin. Just a side note.

The drive by wire is just another delhpi corp product designed to make the percentage of there products in the auto industry higher, because they plan by the year 2010 that every car on the road has 40 percent of the products on board.
