If you do paper towel with a full resevoir, I'd be worried the paper towel(s) would get so soaked with fluid it would be all too easy to drip some when you take the towel(s) out.

I would turkey baster out most (all you can reach), then paper towel what is left (and wipe it clean).

Clutch fluid does get dirty quick. But that is no reason to think its OK and doesn't need changing. Whoever told you that fluid in pic is OK either doesn't know what they are talking about, or more likely just forgot to change it and are just trying to make excuses.

...especially when dirty fluid like this leads to and causes a leaky master cylinder.

I think gravity bleed is the best ( will get that last 1/10 of dirty fluid out where consistency counts IMO, at the slave) if no air is in your system, just don't let it suck in air.

The nitro RC cars i tooled with years ago had a really neat 90' angle fuel neck that i could use to siphen <--- not sure if thats spelled correctly. That gets 97% of the old fluid out and whipe the residue... Bleed the slave cylinder on your next oil change have your buddy pump the pedal. its a good idea to do ever year. i noticed cycling threw climate changes makes the slave notchy with my ITR and my s2000 and i know its time too freshen up and bleed.

Regardless of the color, the fluid should be changed once every three years, and since you don't know the history, I'd flush it.

Changed it this evening when I got home. Got a big syringe and 3mm 10 inches of plastic tube. Sucked the fluid out the reservoir, filled up with fresh DOT4 and pumped the pedal. Repeated this 3 times, then went for a drive and did it one last time when I got back. I'll check how the new fluid looks next week. Already feels better. Thanks.

here's Billman's recommendation using the paper towel----use a turkey baster first to get most of the fluid out then use the paper towel to wipe it clean. see post #7.....

Not a problem! It would just take an enormous number to paper towels to get all the fluid out if that's the only thing you use!

Thanks for sharing to wipe out the reservoir with a paper towel after all the fluid is out-- it is an important step no one else mentioned! (I'd forgotten about it as well!)

change it, its easy. i use a 10 ml curved tip syringe to remove all the fluid. then wipe down with long q-tips and shop towels. refill fluid with fresh using another syringe. Don't' spill any brake fluid on your paint ever.

good luck
