Just for sh!ts and giggles I called the service department of a local Chevy dealership and ask them if it ever needs replaced. They said "Nope. You don't have to do anything to it."

I think there may be some confusion here between chains and belts. Belts always need replaced at some point and most manufacturers say that the chains are good for the life of the motor. That doesn't mean they won't eventually go bad, slip or break. Just like a lot of drivetrain mechanicals, they don't have a maintenence schedule. People have busted rear diffs and bent rods too, but that doesn't mean you need to change them at 90,000 miles.

Do maintenence as you wish, but a chain should be good for more than 100,000 miles easy. I would not even think of it before 150,000. At that point, you will probably be able to find a used low milage engine in a salvage yard to drop in for about the same cost as a new chain job. Maybe even a used 04 2.2 liter. My $.02

To clarify my earlier post about my daughters Saturn -
The problem was actually with the auto-tensioner. It froze up and after a period of time the chain became loose. It was all the slapping of the chain that destroyed the tensioner which pieces of got caught in between the chain and the sprocket. The rest is history
