Default Do I Need To Reset ECU?

I have about 16k miles on my car and I was going to replace the air filter. However, I read in the service manual that if the maintenance minder has not come on yet and I replace the air filter, I need to "connect HDS to the data link connector (DLC) located under the driver's side dashboard" and reset it. Is this a necessity?

I've never done it and have had no problems, but then again as I think about it, I remove the fuse everytime I autocross.

So maybe the car will self destruct if you don't do it. I wouldn't chance it ''

No need to do this. It is just a reminder light for the driver. You can change your air filter no problem.
