Default Do the Cusco roll cages work?

I have been thinking about getting a roll cage or roll bar in my S but I want one that will actually be functional if (god forbid) I was in a wreck where a good one would have helped. I have heard rumors that they are for show. Is that true or false?

Thanks

Ive been in the market for a roll bar... Ive heard so many negative things about the cusco... So bad in fact I wound even post this question in the racing forum, cause I thats what they all are gona say.
Ive seen them, and they dont seem too bad, good place to attach your harness if need be.
If you are looking for a bar for track days, and for safety... there are more respectable options, like the new lovefab bar coming out. Or you can have on fabricated exactly how you want it from a race shop, which is what im doing.

I think a more important question is whether you should install a roll bar or roll cage at all in a street-driven car. The roll hoops are quite effective and have prevented serious injury in roll-over accidents according to many posts on this site.

Independent of the design and manufacturer, adding all of those tubes in the passenger compartment creates a dangerous situation in the event of most types of accidents. Imagine your un-helmeted head bouncing off those hard metal tubes!

Read this FAQ in the Racing and Competition forum for additional information and discussion.

Take a good look at that cage. Ask yourself if you really want to drive around with a bolt aimed at the side of your skull. The "merits" of these things have been debated to death. Bent diagonals, mounting plates too small, don't meet the requirements for any sanctioning body, etc.

I have the 5 point Cusco and am quite pleased with it, I made the rear feet larger and the 5-4 point doesn't have the front/side bars which has the afformentioned bolt from Ludedude. I feel quite comfortable with the cusco personally even though it takes quite a beating from the serious track guys. CoralDoc brings up a serious point about rollcages in street cars.

Which bolt are you refereing to? the 6-7 point cage or 4-5 point roll bar?
