Just did mine this weekend. I did what Saki GT initially did and left the stock plastic cooling plate in, only cutting the passengerside off (immediately under the ram on the plate). I also gutted the stock airbox and removed the resonator as well. All of this ontop of a PWJDM c/f airbox cover and extended K&N filter.
Im very pleased with this setup. Its still burly and throaty, though not nearly as loud as an open air filter setup. The throttle response feels very crisp and there is great power all throughout the powerband (unlike open air filter where its all power uptop).
I feel by retaining the factory cooling plate and only cutting the direct area under the cooling plate ram section, you will reatin the best of both and the best results.
