Disable the ignition system for compression test?

Can a fellow S2k'er help me diagnose my engine. I'm trying to DIY a compression test.
So far in the searches I found how to disable the fuel pump and clear the fuel rail by pulling out the fuel pump fuse while the engine is running. What I haven't found is how to disable the ignition system.
I'm not familar with ignition systems but I have heard either you want to ground the spark plug wire's currents while cranking the starter motor or disable the coil. I've never seen a "coil" (does it look like a solenoid of copper wires?) and I've tried to look around the engine bay for this "coil" or what I think it possibly is but in the end I'm just as lost.
What is the way to disable the ignition system:
Is pulling the spark plug modules sufficent for this test? I've heard there is a risk of burning up "coils" this way?
Or leave spark plugs connected to the wires and let the sparking spark away exposed to the open air? Saftey hazard?
Does the underhood fuse "IG1" have anything to do with ignition and can I pull that one or some other fuse (or does taking a fuse affect the whole ignition starter system i.e. taking out the starter motor as well, which would just create another problem)?
This is a distributorless engine correct?
Please Help!

All you have to do is pull the fuel fuse(15 amp- second from bottom). The "thing" you pull off to get to the spark plug is the "coil." You have four of them.
