Default Differential gear whine

My OEM gears whine between 50-60MPH while using light throttle inputs. This has become more prevalent during the summer months (warm to hot outside air and road temps), and not really an issue at all during the winter months. The whine has become even more noticeable (louder) as the car ages.

Since changing out the OEM fill at around 8K miles, my diff has had a steady diet of LE 607 and 1605. I am in the process of trying an experiment that shows great promise in this area (noise abatement), but it's still a little early to mention what it is. Once I do a UOA in a couple of months, I will describe what I have done (and how safe it might be).

But for now, I just want to know how many people have gear whine. If you want to add a reply as to specifics, that would be great. I have 55k miles on my car now.

Thanks!

how could you tell if the whine is from the transmission or diff?

I am on my third OEM diff... the first one was quiet but failed with a hard shift to second... the second one (new Honda replacement part) developed a whine that was so bad that I was able to negotiate a replacement... the current diff is quiet for now.

Same question... I have gear whine under acceleration but it is not often too noticable and while it *sounds* like it is coming from back, I have no way really of telling. I guess I could jack it up and have my wife "drive" it while I look for the whine underneath.

The gear whine that I hear is definitely coming from behind me and a little to the right. Like I said in my OP, the noise appears when the gear oil is hot between 50-60 MPH in 6th gear while lightly pressing the throttle and letting off. If I were to guess, it would be in the 3000Hz frequency range (for those that have had hearing tests). It's more faint than loud.

My vote is in for OEM - Yes... I'd have to say I'm hearing the same out of mine and I only just now remembered that the gear whine became less noticeable after swapping from whatever was in the diff (put in by last owner) to LE1607.

4.57-R's.
They whine

About 60.000 km (37.500 miles) on the gears.
A recent gear oil change (Amsoil SG SAE 190) brought the whine back to where it used to be: the old oil (same stuff) made it louder.
IMO thicker gear oil makes it less loud when hot, after a spirited drive.
