Default A different TCT noise?

I have an 02 with 106k miles. Completely stock engine.

I'm getting a bit of the typical TCT rattling noise on warm starts but it hasn't been too loud yet, so I've been putting off replacing it. Recently though, I've started getting a completely different noise that I think might be related.

When I'm off throttle above about 4k rpm and going down hill (so under minor engine braking), I get this very intermittent nasty grinding noise from under the hood. It's not extremely loud, but it sounds sort of like taking an angle grinder to a piece of metal. One friend described it as "a rabid squirrel running around in the engine." It's a very disconcerting noise.

My rabid squirrel friend thinks the noise could be related to my bad TCT -- not enough tension in the timing chain allowing to to slap against something under certain engine conditions. Has this been observed before? I need to change the TCT either way at some point, but if it's causing this noise, I'll do it sooner rather than later.
