So I've looked through the FAQ's and stickies and did searches, and there's been a large variety of opinions on which fluid to get. I'm not asking for the best one, but just for my circumstances, which would be more recommended.

I've got an '03 AP1 with 80k miles, diff makes slight whine. This would be for a stock diff and for spirited street driving. Only driven in Chicago summers, stored in winter.

Differential Fluid Options:

1) Almasol LE1605

2) Redline Synthetic Heavy Shockproof

3) Redline 75W-90 GL5

4) Mobil 1 75W-90

Transmission Fluid Options

1) Honda Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF-2)

2) Redline MTL 70W-80 GL4

Seems that many people like the Redline 75W-90 ones, or the Mobil 1 are most popular, but every time the LE1605 is mentioned, it's high praised.

This is my first s2k, so just thought I'd ask a general questions before I start doing work on it.

Oh, also, for motor oil, since its just for Chicago summer drives, with temps ranging from 60F-100F, what'd be the best motor oil, I don't really care about fuel economy or anything. I know OEM is 10W-30, but many say go with 10W-40 instead?

Just follow the user manual for the correct weight on these fluids.
For the transmission, Honda MTF is the best, I dont care what anyone says

For engine oil, 10w30 is fine. Might want to go fully synthetic though since they can sustain high temps longer without degrading.

I would NOT suggest LE1605 for temperatures reaching 35 deg and below. Stick with Mobil 1 in the diff and Redline MTL for the tranny.

I know out here in San Diego the weather rarely see's anything below 45 where I live so I have a bit more options. I use Redline MT90 in the tranny and LE1605 in the Diff. Redline 10w30 for motor.

Oh gotcha, yeah, but I won't be driving the car when its below 35F. Or is the issue that even when storing it, I shouldn't use LE1605 when storage conditions drop below 35F also.

Mobil One for Diff, Honda MTF for tranny.

just put royal purple in diff and royal purple syncro max in the trans gl making a decision

Just to confuse you even further, Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-110 for the diff, and Honda MTF for the tranny, should provide years of reliable service. They feel great in my car.

Honda specs calls out for a straight 90 in the diff, not a 75W-90. just FYI. So If I were you, run some 1605 in the pumpkin and try the honda MTF fluid. if you get grinds, then switch over to Redline, Synromesh, etc.


But really.. all of those fluids are good, so pick what is convenient for you. we all have different opinions.
