Default Diff reassembly

Hi all! I recently opened my diff to check for any chips or cracks in the final gear and bearing caps and luckily everything looks good. But now I'm about to put everything back together and was wondering if I had to check preload or anything. I still have stock gearing and stock diff. Thanks!

So I found this thread https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/555...#entry12238913 but since they used a new gear set that came with shims and such i'm wondering if I need to mark the teeth between the ring and pinion gear or if I could just mesh the two together since it is the OEM gears. Thanks again.

Did you remove the gear set from the housing? I.E. ring gear removed, pinion removed?

Yeah I seperated the ring gear and pinion. I guess all I had to do was check backlash and gear tooth contact on that and I was good to go. I got the tools needed for the job and followed the instructions from my schools technical database. Now I just have to put on the differential casing and I'll be bolting it all up tomorrow. If I need to do something else before putting the casing on tomorrow please let me know. Thanks!

You need to set preload/lash on the LSD/Ring gear. If you removed the pinion gear from the housing, you need to reset preload too

I didn't take the pinion gear out just the ring gear to inspect for chips and cracks and to see the LSD.

Check the backlash on the ring gear before you seal everything back up. It's not absolutely necessary but since you already took everything apart, you might as well replace all the bearings, and if you're replacing the bearings on the pinion, you'll have to remove the pinion. So you'll also need a new crush sleeve, and you'll have to reset the pinion depth and reset the preload, basically a whole can of worms. Was your differential whining before you took it apart? Did you see any metal shavings in the fluid when you drained it?

Backlashed was checked. Yeah differential was whining which is why I wanted to inspect it. No metal shavings inside whatsoever though thank goodness. I just sealed it back up. If the whining persists I'm just gonna send it to a transmission shop.
