I got the same problem and imhearing the same multiple answers. I jacked my car up and let it idle in first and them gave it gas. Most of the time only my left turned and when the diff engaged both would turn but I could stop the right with my hand or foot.

The sound is coming from my right rear. My right wheel is difficult to turn
by hand and doesn't spin freely.

diff is going bad. The dealer put a red fluid in my diff after I gave them mobil1 75 90 gear oil. The spindle nut torque value is 220 ft lbs. My question is do I do this with the wheel in the air or on the ground.

Hopefully my diff isn't going bad - car parts are so expensive here - maybe I should look at trading her in on a newer model - save me the hassle.

Mine does sound like its coming from the back - live in a flat and working on cars is prohibited, so its difficult for me to find out exactly where its coming from.

A single click is the axle nut (220lbs). Multiple clicks is often not enough grease on the axle splines.

I had a TR4a with the LSD that did this (sort of a thump in the seat of the pants feeling) at low speeds and turning the steering wheel at the same time. I think it may be the same thing with your S. Probaby worn parts and or axels but it could last without repair for years. My TR4 did.
