Diff nightmare ?
#12
I've recently busted axle. I thought it was diff but it was axle. (I had comp diff house, 4.57) anyway, while trouble-shooting, I learned few thing. one is '04 diff has better oiling system than prev. models. My mech thinks it's better than comp. housing and it will hold better.
if I do it it again from scratch, I'd take '04 housing, 4.57 gear, and clutch type LSD.
cusco RS has cone type that initial engagement is slow. it might be better for high output engine.
also, if you are interested, I have a '04 diff with 6 mile on it for sale. I need to sell it to get a new LSD since it locked up as axle broke...

This is my "for sale" thread.
Diff for sale.
nothing is wrong. I bought it to get my red up and running first. that's when I thought my gears were all busted. I wanted to rebuild it from ground. then I found out it was the axle. and by mistake, I ended up taking another differential.
So my plan is, sell '04 & '02 diff and get LSD. as stated in my post before, my LSD is locked up. I'm sure I can unlock it but since old diff is open, change LSD as well...
PM me or post on "for sale" thread your offer. I like to keep this thread as technical as possible.

Does the 240SX diff have anything close to our 4.10 ratio?

OK, wait one second. Why do we always assume the diff is fault. In this case is sounds like the CV joints. There have been a few threads on this topic.
As for looking at other cars, if we drove the car in the state it shipped in the way they designed the car, we would not need to look at another diff. But when you have 500whp in a car designed for 200whp, there is going to be issues.

Well if you go wit the 240 rear end I doubt it will hold up in your case of having 10.5 inch wide rims. I am in the process of putting in a supra automaic rear end. The gear ratio is very close to the stock s. Also they can handle more abuse then you could ever throw at it. Many people run 1200hp on slicks with the stock rear end. So with 500-600 hp in the S2000 with slicks it would be no problem.
Supra rear End= $700-800
Custom differential Mount with aluminum driveshaft and heavy duty axles= $1700

Wonder if I can jump in and get feedback from you folks on the drivetrain set up I'm looking at longterm, would be for about a 400-500hp S2000 with no plans for drag use. Planned use would be mostly for street driving and the occasional track outing.
I already have the Comptech reinforced pumpkin, 4.77 gears and a Cusco RS LSD.
I'm probably going to add to that a Level 2 or 5 axle and driveshaft from The Driveshaft Shop.
