Default Diff misconceptions

As we all know, the S diffs in ap1's mainly are pretty weak, I should be more specific, the ring and pinions are weak. Common misconception is that a sign of the diff about to fail is the low speed clunk when pulling into parking spots, this is wrong. If the ring and pinion is failing, a clunk or studder would be noticed during heavy acceleration as the missing teeth are being skipped over. The low speed clunk many of us feel, me included, is a sign of weak/failing clutch packs. A test to check the strength of the clutch packs is the one wheel test. This is where, you jack one wheel off the ground leave the gear box in neutral and rotate the wheel that is off the ground. If the limited slip is working properly it should be very difficult to spin. The actually strength of the limited slip can be tested by using a torque wrench on the axle nut and checking the torque it takes to get the wheel to rotate, I'm not sure what the specs are, but its called the clutch load for the lsd. In my case, my wheel spun fairly freely and had that distinctive clunk of turning tightly at low speed, indicative of loose clutch packs. Now I need to figure out if the clutch packs are wore, or if the improper fluid that is in my diff is causing the clutches to slip more freely...

Well. You might want to rethink your thoughts. Our diff does not have Clutch packs or disks. So that is surely NOT the problem.

Thanks you for playing, please come again

Wow, what style of limited slip do we have?

Then what would be the cause of the noise?

You might want to try searching, describing, and asking before posting an emphatic diagnostic thread regarding a part that our car does not possess.

Well, at least the title is correct!

DIFF MISCONCEPTION... WE DO NOT HAVE CLUTCH-TYPE DIFFERENTIALS.

Actually, I do have a clutch-type differential in mine but it makes a very different sort of sound.

If it's repetitive clunking from that wheel, I'd vote for a pitted inner CV.

More description of when you get the noise would be helpful.

And broken pinion gear teeth whine as well as repetitive noise from the diff. Doesn't have to be on heavy acceleration only. It depends on where your teeth are chipped / broken.
