Make sure you change your diff oil after breaking it in (around 1,000-1,500 miles). Mine was black from metal shavings when I changed it at 1,500 miles.

unfortunately honda has several models with different specifications...so your logic don't work here.

instead of labeling honda is fine for honda's...better to match up the specification requirements with what you're putting in the car.

you wouldn't put Honda 5w20 in your honda s2000 would you?

Help! I just purchased an 03 (I so don't get the AP1, AP2 etc... designations yet) which now has 15,300 miles on it. In march the dealer changed the rear differential fluid with "dual pump fluid" (no part number specified). This dual pump fluid now has 1000 miles on it.

I am not going to drive it again until I change it (unless of course to warm it up for maximum drainage.

The big question is: any damage done up to this point? I have seen 8 or 9000 RPMs a few times, no burn outs (nor ever will), nor hard launches. About 200 miles of Virginia mountain twisties is all.

Any AP-5, or AP-6 specification is adequate? Is redline expensive? I may go mobile one 75w 90, just that if I do that, I can not go back I hear.


One other question, I am going to switch to Mobile one motor oil and I think 15000 miles is a good time to do that. Any sound judgements to the contrary.


I have alot of reading to do on this site! I just learned of this issue and am a little freaked out.

dual pump fluid is the VTM-4 stuff for CRV's and Pilots. I recommend Mobil1 75w-90. No issues here.

Do not use GL-4. Do not use Dual Pump fluid.

There is an FAQ at the top of the UTH forum. All you need to know is there.

Synthetic is better than conventional - no doubt about it.

I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75W100 in my diff. I have 4.57 gears installed in an '04 diff. I tried LE, and I saw no benefit for day to day (hard driving) use (saw a drop in mileage.
I think the benefit of LE is at peak temps on the track, which you will never see on the street. Even then, I think the benefit is minimal.
LE is a conventional base gear oil with some great additives.

I see better gas mileage and less wear with Amsoil than with any other gear oil (no fuzzy stuff on the mag plug at all - and the gear oil comes out clean). I used Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 (which was replaced by the Severe Gear line) when my car had stock gear, and it was by far the best gear oil I've used to date. I use the SG 75W100 with the Richmond gears because they actually call for a slightly thicker gear oil.
LE is too way too thick for the S2000 in the colder months IMHO.

Believe it or not, I personally like the Mobil 1 75W90 gear oil better than Redline (I do not like standard Mobil 1 motor oils at all). I'm a fan of some of the Redline motor oils and their SI-1 fuel system treatment, but feel they need to update the formulation of their gear oils. I had no luck with their MTL for the transmission and have never seen a clean Redline come out of a diff.

are you serious?

i've used le 607 and 1605 and the mag plug ALWAYS has fuzzy stuff.

i'm tempted to try amsoil to see if i can duplicate your claim of no fuzzy stuff.

with the new SAE guidelines, we are using le 1605 which is a 110w.

should we be using amsoil 110w as well?
