Diff blew - now 3rd and 4th gears grind :-(
I rebuilt my rear end and put it all back together a week and a half ago, but as soon as I test drove it, I had a 3rd and 4th gear grind on every upshift. Downshifts aren't so bad. I thought at first I might have gotten some corrosion or rust in the syncros from the car sitting for a couple weeks while I was gathering parts, so at first I wasn't too worried. But I've since driven about 500 miles on the car, changed the fluid (I was using a mix of redline mt90/mtl and just switched back to regular honda mtl), and even flogged it around the canyons yesterday for a while to get some heat in there and work everything out a little. No change.
Did something bend when the rear end blew out? What the hell happened? It was fine up until the diff blew and now it's jacked. I REALLY can't afford a new trans, but I don't know that I want to try a rebuild either. Frankly, the parts for a trans rebuild would be nearly as expensive as a new trans anyway.
Any suggestions? Anyone know where I can get a really low mileage trans for REALLY cheap???

My experience with junk yards has always been that they will sell you used parts for not that much less than what I can get new parts for. My friends at a local dealership give me a pretty decent discount, particularly on larger purchases, so their prices usually aren't that much higher than the crap from the junk yards and I get brand new parts.
With a transmission in particular, I worry about how the car has been driven and how much the syncros would be worn out. Some people are very abusive to transmissions and do a lot of damage very quickly. If I do get one from a junkyard, it would have to have VERY low mileage and a SWEET price.

Rev, if it is grinding on every upshift, You are at least going to need new synchro/gear sets. As you probably allready know, The synchros are only sold with the gears as well. If $ is tight, Keep babying the trans until you can save for a new/ low milage unit. I don't think any fluid changes or "burnishing" the synchros is going to help you out. If you can rebuild a diff, you can rebuild the trans. It's just a lot more work to do everything by the book. Good Luck

Rev - the only options have been stated. Good price on a new unit, junkyard crap-shoot, sweet deal on a low mileage unit, or time and $$ for a rebuild. I'd think that the rebuild would be the least expensive solution that guarantees new parts. I don't know how blowing the diff can cause damage to the transmission. Let us know what you learn about this and good luck with the repairs.

Bahahahaha - warranty! Thanks for putting a smile on my face As CoralDoc said, there are about a thousand reasons why this is not going to be covered under any warranty. I have 60k miles on the car, it's 4 years old, I take it to the track pretty regularly now, it's obviously modified, and following my lawsuit with Honda a few years ago, there's just no chance of a warranty repair.
Gernby, I had kinda thought about that and I think I'll try it just to see if the ol' kick the tires approach will fix it. It's not too likely that will help, but at this point, I'm willing to take a $14 gamble with poor odds.
I'll start pricing parts for a rebuild, but there's really no way to know what I will need until I open it up. Obviously 3rd and 4th gear syncros are getting messed up pretty bad with all the recent grinding, but I don't think the syncros were the cause of the grinding in the first place. I believe something else went out and caused that. Whether it's a bad bearing, a bend shaft, a bent shift fork, something else - I dunno. My guess is it's going to be expensive. Which is why I'm not all that keen on cracking it open in the first place... If it's going to cost me $1500 for parts and take me a week to rebuild the damn thing (and I don't really have a week to spare right now)... then maybe I should just look for a used trans or cough up the money for a new one.
