You didnt damage the engine. You shifted at/near redline and didnt get the car into gear until after the RPMS dropped so I doubt there was an over-rev. You probably just grinded gears which is something we all do from time to time. Doing it every once in a while wont hurt anything. If your concerned then change your tranny oil and get some of the possible metal out of the system.

I had the gearbox oil changed, no swarf found in what came out of it. This has improved the whining, though it can be still be heard.

I just drive with the windows open at which point I can't hear it over the induction sound.

I will think about changing it for a used one when the car needs a new clutch. At 102k miles the clutch feels fine, so hopefully the whine doesn't get worse and the gearbox carries on working.

Were these WOT shifts?

If so, check your rear differential for broken metal.

The whining and occasional other slightly different noises do concern me though. Flying down the road at 8500 rpm does make me worry what happens when the gearbox decides to go?

Has anyone had similar symptoms on their gearbox? I want to know what happens when the gears decided to stop meshing together and block all movement thus locking up the wheels.

Basically, you crash. I've only heard of one vehicle that crashed after locking up its tranny. That was a 490cc vintage Maico dirt bike which had its case holed by a large rock. Losing all of the tranny oil.

What did your oil looked like?

The oil was clean. 1200 miles have since passed with no change in the whine its making. I will get a used gearbox installed with a new clutch soon. There is just the worry on my mind whenever I'm "going for it".

Perhaps, change the gearbox oil in the next few months. Check for any new debris.

I don't think that's ever happened.
