did you manage to break you 2nd gear
Hello people Every now and then I grind 2nd gear when shifting from 1st to 2nd and I just wanted to know what is the average number of times you grind when shifting? In 10,000 miles it probably happened about 20-25 times. I'm not sure if it's a lot or not but I get very paranoid every time it happens and I feel bad for the car . Most of the time it happens when I simply don't pay attention when shifting during spirited driving, so my grinds are my fault, simple driver's error oh well
If you can (you don't have to), after selecting your answer, write:
1. when it happens to you
2. why you think it's happening
3. how much damage you think you are doing to the transmission
4. how long will your transmission last if you keep grinding
thx. and maybe other people will find it useful in guess-timating how long their tranny will last

Billman fixed my 1-2 grind a while back, and I hope it doesn't come back when the weather turns cold again.
It happens to me a lot in winter. The first few miles from my house to the highway have a good few lights, and I seemed to grind at least once every morning, usually at low speeds.
The worst ever was when I floored it in first to merge onto the highway, then tried to shift to second and heard these awful crunching noises. The next light had turned red, so I just coasted to a stop. The gearbox felt like I was stirring a spoon in oatmeal, and it wouldn't go into first at all. I started in second at that light and the next one, and by the time I hit the next light (15 miles later) I was able to get back into first.

Mine has 18k miles and 3 years of heavy autocross use. I've ground 2nd maybe a half dozen times. It happens during an autocross run when the car is loaded unevenly on the suspension. I've learned to concentrate on shifting when the car is not laterally loaded and pointing straight. In my case, it is driver error, so I voted "not grind at all."

It happens to me right after start up. It's more of a clunck for me than a grind. As soon as the car is warmed up though, no more clunk, and I have never had it grind.
