To each, their own, but it's a 2.0L motor. I find I have to work to get bad mileage. That's why I was so suprised when my gas mileage was going down. It was seriously like .5 MPG a week from ~28 down to 25.5 MPG. My last 3 tanks since the changes were 27.19, 26.48 (different pump, I've used this one before and I think it rips you off...), and 27.22.

You are probably seeing improved mpg due to cooler and less humid weather.

I guess that's a possibility; it looks like temps are a degree or two lately, and it could have been exacerbated by my serious need for new coolant. I was running a little low.

Hmm... I was getting 1 mpg more (31.4 mpg) when it was hot outside in the mid 90's as opposed to upper 70's, low 80's.

31.4mpg is ridiculous whatever you are using to calculate the mpg is wrong!!

It's not a matter of it being wrong, it's a matter of units. Is it his average for 100 miles, his average for the consumption of 1 tank, or his average over the course of many tanks?

Depending on how, when, and where you drive, 30 MPG is definitely possible in this car. I would never say that it's a good representation of the car's consumption under normal conditions, though. During a period where I was driving in low traffic, low speed conditions, where I was able to coast a lot and avoid waiting at lights. I acheived well over 30 MPG (32 & 34 MPG IIRC) for two separate tank-fulls.

A loss of torque from an oversized exhaust system will hurt fuel economy in daily driving part-throttle driving conditions. If you lose mid-range part=throttle torque you will need to use more throttle to maintain cruising speeds. Maybe your new exhaust has better mid-range torque in part throttle driving conditions. Manufacturers of aftermarket exhausts measure their performance at WOT, but you don't really know how they affect the operation of the engine in part-throttle driving conditions, a properly sized exhaust system is very important.

Correct. Cooler air = more dense air which equates to more fuel being burned.
