replace your retainers and keepers.

then do a compression and leakdown test.

thats it, and that will be peace of mind.

unless people lied to me, i had good compression and leakdown after my over-rev, 85mph into 2nd gear.

8 months later i had bad compression and leakage due to bent valves.

i'm guessing dealer and mechanic lied to me and never tested my compression...but who knows.

no way to tell, compression test and leakdown to be sure.

pull the vc if you have a chance, you can deverlop a crack in the retainer

Billman (a well respected s2000 specialist) has seen dozens of cars like yours which had the valve spring retainers crack on ap1 due to overrev like you have done. Eventually (usually months later), the valves contact the piston.

You should probably have them inspected!

There are many threads, but this one shows what a good retainer and a bad retainer look like:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...0&#entry4690730

Usually everything looks fine (compression, no weird noises, etc.) except for the valve retainers, until the valve contacts the piston, at which time you will be sorry.

There are many other threads about this, do a search for Billman250 and valve retainers.

$ shift. by your speed, it sounds like you were/are pretty close to a mechanical over-rev. A lot of really good advice on here though so go get some stuff checked out.

I did very similar downshift with 83mph, not even 1/2 of a second, still no problem in the last 6k miles. however, it is best to check (and even change - as it is a cheap part) the retainers.

Billman250 definitely does know his stuff. I remember researching this like crazy when I bought my car used in the summer. s2ki can make you very paranoid at times I never did get around to pulling the valve cover to check the retainers though. Buying a used car can be very scary because who knows what the previous owner did to it.

I have since put on 12,000miles problem free, so for those of you that know, my retainers are most likely fine right?

b est way to find out, top out 2nd gear and find out if 2nd gear goes higher than 77, if it goes to 80, then you are ok...
