Did I lug my engine?
I was at a stoplight today and was ready to drive when the light turned green. But something felt weird; it felt like my car was going to die as if I was in the wrong gear (maybe 3rd). It started shaking slightly then I noticed my gear changed from whatever gear it was in to neutral all by itself. It was the weirdest thing. Could it be possible that I was in 3rd gear by accident and my car somehow kicked it into netural to prevent further damage to the engine? Also, it seems that my Vtech isn't kicking in like it used to after this incident. Could be all in my mind but who knows.

I have a 2001 and I've never had a gear pop out as others have stated. One thing I have noticed is, is that when I rev past 4-5K and slowly shift, it seems like the shifter has a hair trigger to go back into neutral, almost like it's sensing it's time to move through the gate. I like it.
Maybe your gear wasn't fully engaged? I would think if you were in 3rd gear and didn't floor the gas you would have stalled out in less than a second.

Gear "pop out" on AP2s seem to be NOT an UNcommon thing. I think that if you combine this propensity with lugging, the added vibration that accompanies any sort of severe lugging, will aggravate a gear pop out.

well if you are letting of the throttle just as you are about to shift you will have disengaged the dogs momentarily, which will place the dogs into a window where nothing is touching them at the moment. That way you could flick it out of gear with your pinky.
When I learned how to clutchless shift, I would let off the throttle just as i need to pull it out, and it would take almost zero force to get it out. THe fun part is when it sucks itself into the next gear (with just a nudge from you) when you match your revs right. BTW although its possible I would not reccommend clutchless shifting, especially in an s2k, if you have a dog box, or a box in which the syncros are busted you may try it.
