Dead Battery

Your battery is not dead if you can crank the engine using the starter motor. For a motor to start you need two more things in addition to a healthy battery and a good starter motor- sparks and fuel- you are missing one or both. For fuel make sure you have gas in the tank and that you can hear the fuel pump pressurize the system when you first turn on the ignition key. As for ascertaining if you have sparks ,having never had a car with individual ignition coils and deeply recessed sparkplugs before I cannot help you there.

Just cranks and cranks without attempting to fire

Check to see if the immobilizer light is flashing when you start the car, if it flashes more than normal then you got a bad key. Hope this solves your problem, if not then check the fuse, starter, fuel, and spark. Good luck and let us know what the problem is when and if you find it.
