They did compression test and leak down. I asked if they heard a leak on intake or exhaust side, but they acted like I was crazy to ask. I already had the car back and told them I wasn't going to have them do the work, so I doubt they felt like being helpful. I just have the ticket with mechanics notes.

Took some macro pics of the head gasket below. It appears to my simple mind to be looking a little rough between the cylinders, especially 2-3. I tried to label as best as possible, lower numbered cylinder in on the right. I did both sides of the gasket. When I put this thing back together, what all gaskets should I replace... head, intake, any others?

The coating came off the gasket (which is normal) There is no obvious combustion path across. I'd bet the valve seats are done.

Do head studs need to be replaced when rebuilding? One of my friends said something about them not really being ment to get reused.

yes, you should consider those as one use only. Once they have been properly torqued during initial installation, they literally stretch and will not set correctly again with the same torque values.

People have re-used them, but if you love your car, why bother...

S2k head bolts are not torque to yield. They can be safely reused after inspecting the threads. Used bolts have a different torque angle setting than new
