Unbolt the cup from the diff flange and pry it away from it. There is a small shaft in there but it will just clear.

See explain that^ Just took off the cups and swapped around right? I kinda assumed you could do that but didnt know for sure.
I didn't have a long enough breaker bar or arm power for the axle nut so I left it all alone and managed to push the cup out of the axle. After you unbolt The cup has a useless shaft that does nothing but protrude into the diff and flip you off like a middle finger. There should be enough play in the CV joints that you can push hard enough to clear the protruding shaft off the diff. It may help o unbolt the sway bar but I didn't do it.
The shaft that protrudes into the diff serves to align the axle with the diff output flanges. If it wasn't there, the clearance between the bolts and axle inside the bolt holes would allow the diff to slightly mis-align and you would feel a vibration at speed.

Haha looks like I have no excuse not to swap the cups out now! Thanks. Anyone else clean and replace the grease inside the cups/axle? I think it would be a good idea but I seen people just swapping without new grease. Sorry for totally hijacking the thread, but it seems to relate to what you are talking about. If you dont even need to remove the axles, then you wont need the balljoint separator
.

Definitely re-grease while you are there. Not sure why one wouldn't since it's off anyway. Redline CV-2 high pressure iirc (double check that).

1/2 can per side.

I remember reading that somewhere...
you dont need one. just undo the 17mm ball joint nut and hit the side of the balljoint on the spindle itself and it will pop out, you have to give it a few good hard hits for it to pop
