CV Axle Shaft Replacement
#11
The CV pitting issue usually shows up from 40mph onward. Not saying that yours is not that, but mileage alone I would not worry about. Most times (but not always) the failure is pitting from hard launches.. The CV bucket swap is so easy, I would always do that first. Only cost if you do it yourself is the cost of new grease. That type of pitting/wear is not going to equate to a short life of the axle overall.

I have a slight vibration coming from the rear end under acceleration at 65-70 mph. The car has 127,000 miles and the CV are original so it is not surprising there is a bit of wear. I thought about doing the bucket swap but given the miles I thought if I could find a pair of rebuilt OEM reasonably priced I would just go ahead and replace them. The Rock Auto deal is what I was looking for. For $150 a piece you can freshen up both axles completely and keep the old axles. If you want your core deposit back return the old axles and the cost per side is only $55.
do the cv swap or spacer. don't use oem grease, redline grease worked well for me. went with mobil 1 grease the next time but haven't taken it apart to see the wear.

If replacing the CV cups doesn't do it, maybe it's your prop shaft. I replaced both cv cups and it improved things massively but didn't get rid of all the vibrations. So I took a look and my 200k mile prop shaft has probably leaked all its grease by now.

The guys at Ballade Sports are really good guys with tons of experience with the S. I'd replaced my axles with the Ballade OEM rebuilt axles couple of years ago and had no issues. As you can see, quality is top notch.

5 or so years ago when my car was lower I had a driver axle go/pitted. I tried the 2 recommended axles and both new and a reman had issues with binding after driving on the highway for a few min. (Spacers were installed). Went to a used oem, no issues sense.

As others have suggested, I also highly recommend just swapping the OEM buckets left to right, it's the very best solution. If they are pitted then buying new or remanned is honestly and truly a waste of money, the side to side swap is the way to go. Also the Redline CV-2 grease seems to be a better lubricant then the Honda OEM grease (and I'm a super huge fan of Honda fluids and greases, but for the buckets I think the Redline CV-2 is possibly a better option).
