Default Crankwalk

So the car stopped running when i pushed the clutch in the other day. Motor was seized...

Came home tore the oil pan off. No metal chunks but SLIGHTLY glittery. Not even enough to worry honestly. I had to drain some in a glass and hold it up in light to see it..The rest of the motor looked fantastic. Nice and Clean.

Well I guess the thrust washer at the front cashed out and it caused the rear one to spin and lock the crank.

I took a thin piece of metal, and hammered the rear thrust washer "back around" and the crank moved free again..

Okay, is the motor done? I assume so. What caused this? I do have an aftermarket clutch so I know that doesn't help the situation...

feels bad man... Someone gimme some insight. New motor time? How common is it for S2ks to experience this?

It's an AP1 btw. MY00

How many miles? My AP1 had the thrust bearings blow out at 104k, this was approx 10k after a turbo install and 3k after an ACT HD clutch install. I swapped in an F22c and haven't had the chance to have the original block checked out yet. But, everyone I've spoken to, from Billman to InlinePro said if your thrust bearings go out, the block is either trashed, or it wouldn't be anywhere near cost effective to try and reuse the bottom end.

Sucks, I know. Sorry for your loss.

There isn't any physical damage that I can see. No metal in the pan or anything?

It wouldn't be worth buying some new Thrust bearings and tossing them in?

I walked the crank in my AP1 a week after purchase with 70k miles. ACT HD clutch. Head was fine, had a spare bottom end rebuilt and put the head on. New Exedy OEM replacement clutch and all has been well ever since..knock on wood.

So no one has successfully been able to get away with replacing the thrust washers without needing a bottom end rebuild?

Im skeptical. At this point i don't have anything to lose other then a few bucks for the washers. I have zero metal in the oil and no other physical damage anywhere. Im going to pull the girdle tonight and check the mains. If all is well, I am going to toss in some new washers and pray for the best.

Wish you luck... I'd hate to have you go to that trouble and have it toss the bearings again.

Mains look brand new. Crank is scarred up on. the side the washer wore down. I pulled both washers out. Both intact.

But she's done. Time for a motor.
