Crank Shaft Position Sensor
Does any know if the spindle that the crank shaft position sensor reads from can be put on backwards?
I just finished putting back together the engine for the S. But it will not rev over 3k. The ecm is in 'default' mode. If I plug in the Crank Shaft Position Sensor the car will not start but if I leave it out it will start but only rev to 3k. I am getting a pulse from the sensor so I do not think that I damaged it. In the service manual it never says that the spindle goes on a certain way. Nor do I remember a stamp on it. The other weird thing is that when plugged in it does not throw a code?
If anyone has taken the engine apart, do they remember if it does go on a certain way.
I hope that it is symmetrical so that is not the problem, I have to take apart the entire engine again to get to it.

Is the check engine light coming on? If you assemble the engine with the cam timing incorrect the PCM gets in an argument with the Crank position sensor and won't rev over approx. 3K. Most likely DTC is P0336 CKP intermittent interruption. If you mixed up the TDC1 and TDC2 connectors at the back of the valve cover I believe it would cause the same problem. The sensors have the same plugs. I would check TDC1&2 1 st, try switching connectors, although the harness should limit you to how far you can pull them. Then check your Cam timing.

I appreciate your input. Any and all ideas are a great help. I tore off the valve cover just to double check that the cams were installed correctly. They are lined perfectly. I will check those connectors, but as you said, I don't think they reach just for that purpose. So you can not mix them.
Spoke to Honda today and they said that it CAN be put on backwards. Although I swear it was completely symmetrical. I just hope that I can tear off the timing cover without having to take off the head (those are the instructions in the service manual).

I think the crank sensor is simply used to determine the engines speed of rotation and does not need to be indexed. The sensors on the back of the camshafts are used to measure the actual position of the engine (TDC reference) though the honda uses two of them for some reason. I would check the position of the sensors on the rear of the camshafts and double check your cam timing.
Did you take the chopper plates off the rear of the camshafts?
Good luck.

No, I am not getting a CEL. Unless I unplug the CPS, then of course I do. I will check the Cam timing again today. Yes, the mark was lined up.
No, I did not take the chopper plates off, with the cams not being marked I did not want to chance switching them.
